How to Prevent Dry Hair in Winter

Preventative measures for dry brittle hair

Hair can accumulate static electricity and even become brittle during the harsh winter months. If you don't have a well balanced diet or use not-so-gentle products on your hair, it doesn't take much for the cold and dry weather to damage it.

Preventative measures can ensure that your hair stays healthy and hydrated during the winter.

Step 1 : Wash your hair every other day to avoid over drying, which can occur if you wash your hair every day. When you wash your hair, you also wash out all of the natural oils that help keep your hair moisturized.

Step 2 : Use a gentle shampoo and hydrating conditioner on your hair. The conditioner should seal in moisture, and the shampoo should simply clarify your hair.

Step 3 : Crack a couple eggs in a bowl and apply the eggs onto your hair using your hands. Gloves can be used to reduce the risk of salmonella poisoning. Eggs are a natural way that you can hydrate your hair at home. Another common household item is mayonnaise, which helps with split ends. After applying either the eggs or mayonnaise, keep plastic wrap on your hair for about 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly and wash your hair with shampoo.

Step 4 : Use a thick, leave-in conditioner once a week or at the very least use a leave-in conditioner that you can spray on your hair on a daily basis. This can help prevent static.

Step 5 : Avoid hair care and styling products that contain alcohol, which will only dry out your hair. Use products that contain shea butter and olive oil

Conditioner Rinse - Mix the following to prepare the magic rinse:

* 1 Teaspoon of castor oil.
* 1 Teaspoon of Indian gooseberry or Bacopa oil.
* 1 Teaspoon of Malt Vinegar.
* 1 Teaspoon of Glycerin.
* 1 Teaspoon of Shampoo.

The castor oil gives body to hair; the herbal oil acts like a hair tonic, vinegar; restores the acid mantle, glycerin moisturizes the hair and shampoo is the medium that blends the ingredients. Before washing the hair, apply this mixture to the hair gently and leave it on for about twenty minutes. Shampoo it out with clear water and feel the marvelous change in your hair texture.

Conditioner for Shine and Sheen - Grate few onions and some cabbage together and leave in a copper utensil overnight. In the morning, add few drops of eau-de cologne to remove the onion smell. Add few drops of herbal oil like Indian gooseberry or Bacopa and then apply. Shampoo after 20 minutes. Your hair will gain a superb gloss and colour. You may follow this routine once a week.

Henna Conditioners - For oily hair-Mix Henna with 2 tablespoons of yogurt and a pinch of sugar to a light paste. Add a bit of water if the paste is thick. Apply on hair and leave it on for twenty minutes. Rinse it out with clear water.

For dry hair - Mix Henna in a tablespoon of oil and enough warm milk to make a paste. Apply and leave on for twenty minutes. Rinse it out later. The Henna hair conditioners give color sheen and body to the hair.

Hair-Setting Conditioner - Mix one teaspoon of gelatin, available in the market, in a mug of water. Rinse your hair with it. Finger-dry your hair and set them as you desire.

Because there are different kinds of conditioners, you can be very specific in your choice and use the one that best suits your needs. Use herbal hair conditioner or home-made conditioners preferably.
